Returning Volunteer? Renew via the Volunteer Portal

If you volunteered with SPS since September 2018, we likely already have a volunteer application on file for you. Please do not create a new volunteer application! Visit our Renew or Update Volunteer page for details.

What type of volunteer role are you applying for?

Category A

Examples: classroom or library assistance, field trip planning, office or recess support, and school newsletter editor. 

Category B

Category B Volunteer:  所有涉及与学生接触的学校和远程志愿者角色，没有工作人员或其他经批准的A类志愿者在场. Additional screening is required for Category B volunteers. Please only apply for Category B if SPS staff specifically requested it.

Examples: math club coach, one-on-one tutor (including remote/virtual), mentor, and chaperone for field trips longer than three days.  

Field Trip Chaperones & Drivers

Field trip chaperones and drivers: 只有经批准的A类或B类义工才可担任监护人或司机.

Athletics & Sports

Athletic sports include Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Slow Pitch, Soccer, Softball/Fast Pitch, Swim, Tennis, Track, Track & Field, Ultimate Frisbee (Middle School only), Volleyball, Wrestling.

All other sports coaches 被学校聘为有额外要求的B类学校义工(CPR & First Aid, Concussion, and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Courses).

Garden and Self-Help Projects

Garden volunteers and Self-Help Projects volunteers do not complete this volunteer application process. Instead, please review instructions from Self Help Projects.

Two Weeks Minimum Required for Approval

For the following reasons, 志愿者必须在预计的志愿服务开始日期前至少两(2)周更新他们的申请:

  • SPS receives up to 15,000 volunteer applications and renewals each year. Approval of each volunteer requires action by your school’s Volunteer Program Liaison (VPL) and one central office staff member.
  • Due to budget cuts, many school office positions were cut by 50% or eliminated, and central office staff are absorbing additional duties.

Step 1: Online Training – Preventing Sexual Abuse of Children and Youth

Nationally, 1 in 4 girls & 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before age 18. Through this course, 你将通过学习识别和应对性侵犯来帮助保护儿童.

Step 3: Volunteer Application (includes Background Check)

Complete the volunteer application
  • Volunteer applications are processed online. 每年SPS志愿者通过在线填写和/或更新他们的申请来拯救14棵树. Thank you! 
  • Once you are approved as a volunteer in our online system, 只要你在SPS做志愿者，你的申请材料就会一直有效. Every two years, we will ask whether you would like to stay active and, if so, request your permission to complete a new background check.

Determining your Background Check Type

SPS is committed to providing students with a safe educational environment. 这包括确保每个志愿者和工作人员完成适当的犯罪背景调查.

  • WATCH does not produce criminal records outside of our state, and unfortunately, the federal government does not provide an equivalent database. Therefore, 在过去三年中居住在其他州或国家的A类志愿者必须从我们的合作供应商处购买他们的背景调查, Sterling Volunteers – the fee is usually $21. 
Additional Screening for Category B Volunteers

Selecting an incorrect background check type will delay your approval. 

Financial Burden

Background Results
  • 如果你的州背景调查是明确的，你将立即通过电子邮件通知.
  • If you purchase a national or international background check, you will receive your results directly from Sterling Volunteers, usually within a few days.
  • 如果你的背景调查中有任何记录或你的报告显示可能有重复(与你名字相似的其他华盛顿州居民的犯罪记录), 学校志愿者项目联络员将手动处理您的背景调查. Expect an additional week for processing.

Step 4: School Approval

Before your first volunteer shift, 学校志愿者项目联络员必须亲自核实你的身份(或通过虚拟志愿者的在线会议)。. Please have the following available: 

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • 如果您没有完成全国(斯特林志愿者)背景调查，并且您的华盛顿州身份证是在3年前签发的, please bring proof of 3-year residency in Washington State. Examples: older/expired ID, lease agreement, utility bill, school records. 确保这份文件至少是三年前签发的，并注明你的全名和华盛顿州的地址. If your child attends the school, office staff may 能够查看您孩子的学校注册记录(并非所有工作人员都可以访问它们).
